Aluminium: the most abundant metal in the Earth’s crust.

Aluminium makes up around 8% of the Earth’s crust by weight. As it reacts easily with oxygen, it isn’t found in its metallic state apart from in certain places with no oxygen such as volcanic mud. It is non-magnetic and non-sparking and has a high resistance to corrosion due to the forming of a powdery surface layer of aluminium oxide. Aluminium plant containers are lacquered to prevent oxidisation and although resistant to further corrosion, the powdery surface coating is not an attractive finish for outdoor plant containers and is not

normally recommended. The lacquer prevents oxidisation for some time when used outdoors but is not durable enough for long term use. Although very abundant, the extraction process for aluminium is not as simple as it is for iron and is done by electrolysis.

The aluminium drink can is the most recycled container in the world. Around 63% of all such cans are recycled. Aluminium is 100% recyclable and the recycling uses only 5% of the energy required to produce aluminium from ore.
